An exceptionally rare bentwood occasional chair by Thonet.
This chair, documented in the 1888 Thonet catalogue, was the result of experimentation of steaming and glueing veneer boards before shaping and cutting them to create the interlocking back. The method was deemed too tricky and costly for large scale production, and the chair never went into full manufacturing with only a small handful of models ever made.
Open intertwined stained beechwood with gilded outlines and a central finial.
88cm x 46cm x 41cm.
C1888, Vienna.
Literature
Exhibited at the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna Bentwood exhibition in 2019 and documented on page 166 of the catalogue.
Documented in Alexander Von Vegesack book, ‘Das Thonet Buch’, 1987, p. 104.
