Village sketch by Pierre Bonnard (1869–1954).
c. 1915
Pencil on paper, drawn on the reverse of the artists hotel lunch receipt.
The great impressionist, Pierre Bonnard drew everywhere and at any time. When the eye sees something beautiful, his hand had to draw it. He often felt ‘weak in front of nature’, compelled to capture fleeting moments of beauty almost at the very instant he experienced them.
This small and humble sketch epitomises the feeling of urgency he often felt. Executed with a blunted pencil on the reverse of his hotel lunch receipt, it was most likely drawn on the only paper he had to hand at that moment.
