Signed and dated, 1935.

Pencil on paper.

82cm x 61cm.

Born the fifth and youngest child of immigrant parents in Spitalfields, Gertler became one of the most important painters of the first half of the 20th Century. Suffering from ill health, financial difficulties, the loss of Dora Carrington and the incoming war, Gertler committed suicide on 23 June, 1939. Memorial exhibitions were held at the Leicester Galleries in 1941, Ben Uri Gallery in 1944 and Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1949.
