A superb carved limestone tablet by Michael Royde Smith (dates unknown).

Royde Smith is a relatively unknown stonemason and sculptor who worked with Eric Gill at his workshop in Ditchling village and later in Buckinghamshire.

Everything made at Gill’s workshop was inspired by him although not everything necessarily came from his hand. He made use of a fellow stone cutters such as Royde Smith, Joseph Cribb, John Skelton and Desmond Chute.

Hopton Wood Limestone.

C1940, England.

40cm x 18cm (small to medium sized).

Condition Report - A few little niggles to the edges but nothing major.
