Juan Luis Buñuel (1934 - 2017) Sculpture
An extraordinary surrealist wire sculpture by Juan Luis Buñuel (1934 - 2017).
The sculpture was most likely part of a solo show at Willard Gallery, New York in October 1969. The gallery closed in 1987 and had some wonderful exhibitions with the likes of Anni Albers and Paul Klee. They were also frequent exhibitors of Alexander Calder’s (1889 - 1976) jewellery - see some wonderful pictures here.
The Buñuel family were close friends with the leading surrealists of the time such as Dali and Calder. It is possible that Calder himself may have had a hand in the creation of this work. Buñuel states in his memoir, ‘Good Films, Cheap Wine, Few Friends’, that Alexander Calder helped him make his wire sculptures on a number of occasions.
