Nude in a Landscape by Jean Souverbie (1891-1981).
Souverbie was a key painter associated with the movement of modern classicism that emerged in France between the two world wars. After enrolling at Académie Ranson in 1916 underneath the likes of Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Félix Vallotton, Souverbie developed a modernist sensibility within a classical framework. His work frequently exploring allegorical, mythological, and humanist themes that would see him gain numerous commissions for murals and large-scale public works.
Souverbie also held important institutional roles, most notably as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he influenced generations of painters. Though less widely known today than some of his contemporaries, he remains an important figure in 20th-century French painting. His work can be found in public and private collections worldwide including the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d'Art Moderne Paris, the Museum of Art in Philadelphia and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston amongst many others.
